Tokoroa’s library has stood at the heart of its community for more than three decades. Now it has been reimagined to serve many more.
Through adaptive reuse, APG Architects have transformed the existing 1990s building into Huihuinga Rau, a community hub shaped around gathering, learning and belonging.
A full Nu Wall reclad delivers its identity and stronger performance, extending the life of a valued public asset well into the future.
Rather than replace the building, the refurbishment gives it a new life by strengthening its performance, expanding its purpose and creating a more welcoming place for the people of South Waikato.
Reopened as Huihuinga Rau Community Hub and Library, the revitalised building brings together library and Council services with new community meeting and sensory spaces designed around connection, accessibility and everyday use.
Adaptive reuse was central to the project. The 1990s structure was retained whilst addressing weathertightness, thermal performance and energy efficiency.
Recladding the existing building in Nu Wall aluminium formed a key part of the renewal. It provides the low-maintenance and durability performance required of a public building while creating a distinctly new architectural identity.
APG Architects combined E Random and Mono Random to introduce variation in profile, scale and shadow across the façade. Warm colours of Dulux Duratec Champagne Kinetic Matt sit together with the Dulux Duratec Electro Sensational Champagne contrast against the Dulux Duratec Textured FlaxPod. The result is a cohesive but expressive palette that gives the building renewed character and a stronger sense of place.
Huihuinga Rau is a project about extending the value of an existing building and public asset and the role it plays within its community. By retaining what could be renewed and investing in materials chosen for longevity and durability, the project strengthens an established public building for the long term, with reduced maintenance and less disruption over the years ahead.
This is more than a refurbished library. It’s a place designed to give back, supporting connection, learning and belonging for generations to come.
